Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 ½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) black cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (dairy-free milk optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Black food coloring or edible black gel pen (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. Cream the butter and cream cheese in a large bowl using a mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the granulated sugar and continue mixing until fully incorporated and light, about 2 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, black cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  7. Drop dough balls using a tablespoon or cookie scoop onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, rotating the sheet halfway through. Cookies should be set but still soft to the touch.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  10. Prepare the spider web icing by whisking powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust consistency as needed.
  11. Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with the icing. Pipe a spiral from the center outward on each cookie.
  12. Use a toothpick or skewer to drag lines from the center of the spiral to the edges to create the spider web effect.
  13. Allow the icing to set at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Optionally, add spider decorations with black food coloring or edible gel pen.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Avoid overmixing the dough to keep cookies tender. Practice piping spider webs on parchment paper if needed. Chilling dough for 30 minutes is optional but helps cookies hold shape. Adjust icing consistency carefully to pipe smooth webs. Cookies can be frozen without icing for up to 3 months.
