This creamy, savory cheese ball is shaped like a football and topped with pretzel laces, making it the ultimate game day appetizer. Loaded with cheddar, bacon, and ranch seasoning, it’s a crowd-pleaser that’s easy to make ahead.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 ounces cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup cooked, crumbled bacon (about 8 strips)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (both white and green parts)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) ranch dressing mix
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1215 pretzel sticks (straight, not twists)
  • 12 tablespoons additional cooked, crumbled bacon (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Soften the cream cheese: Take cream cheese out of fridge at least 30-60 minutes before starting. It should be soft enough to easily press a finger into it.
  2. Mix the base: In a large mixing bowl, beat softened cream cheese with a hand mixer on medium speed until smooth and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl.
  3. Add the flavor: Add shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped green onions, red bell pepper, ranch dressing mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix on low speed until just combined. Scrape down bowl again.
  4. Chill the mixture: Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Shape the football: Lay a large piece of plastic wrap on counter. Scoop chilled cheese mixture onto center of plastic wrap. Use plastic wrap to shape into a rough football shape (oval with slightly pointed ends). Wrap tightly and twist ends. Place on baking sheet or plate and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 2 days.
  6. Prepare the coating: About 15 minutes before serving, combine chopped pecans (if using) and fresh parsley on a large plate or shallow dish. Mix together with a fork.
  7. Coat the cheese ball: Unwrap chilled football. Gently roll in pecan-parsley mixture, pressing lightly so coating sticks. Leave a small patch on top bare for laces if desired.
  8. Add the pretzel laces: Gently press 4-5 pretzel sticks into top of cheese ball, angling slightly to mimic laces. Add shorter pretzel stick pieces on sides for stitching if desired. Sprinkle extra crumbled bacon on top.
  9. Serve: Transfer to a serving platter. Surround with favorite dippers such as crackers, pretzel chips, celery sticks, carrot sticks, apple slices, or more pretzel sticks.

Notes

Don’t skip the initial 30-minute chill; it makes shaping much easier. For best results, use full-fat cream cheese and shred cheddar from a block. Add pretzel laces just before serving to keep them crunchy. The cheese ball can be made up to 2 days in advance (without coating and laces).
