An easy-to-assemble overnight breakfast casserole featuring buttery croissants, savory ham, and melty Swiss cheese soaked in a custardy egg mixture, perfect for stress-free mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large buttery croissants, torn into bite-sized pieces (day-old works best for soaking)
  • 8 ounces diced cooked ham
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • 8 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for drizzling on top)

Instructions

  1. Tear 6 large croissants into roughly 1- to 2-inch pieces and place them evenly in the greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Scatter 8 ounces of diced cooked ham evenly over the croissants.
  2. Sprinkle 1 ½ cups shredded Swiss cheese evenly over the croissant and ham mixture.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together 8 large eggs, 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half, 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, and ½ teaspoon onion powder until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the croissants, ham, and cheese, pressing down gently with a spatula to help the croissants soak up the custard. Let the dish rest at room temperature for about 10 minutes before covering with plastic wrap and refrigerating overnight.
  5. The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the plastic wrap and drizzle 2 tablespoons melted butter over the top for a golden crust.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the casserole is set in the center and the top is golden brown. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean but moist.
  7. Let the casserole sit for 5-10 minutes after baking before cutting and serving.

Notes

Use day-old croissants for best texture to avoid sogginess. Room temperature eggs help with even cooking. If the top browns too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. For gluten-free, substitute croissants with gluten-free bread. For vegetarian, omit ham and add sautéed mushrooms or spinach.
