Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium tart apples (like Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Mini mason jars (4-ounce size)
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apple filling: In a medium bowl, toss peeled and diced apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  2. Make the crumble topping: In a large bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Add cold, cubed butter and vanilla extract. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut butter into dry ingredients until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized bits.
  3. Assemble the jars: Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the apple mixture into each mini mason jar, pressing slightly. Drizzle about 1 teaspoon of caramel sauce over the apples. Add a generous 2 tablespoons of crumble topping, covering the apples completely.
  4. Bake the jars: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place jars on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes until crumble topping is golden brown and apples are bubbly and soft.
  5. Cool and store: Let jars cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before sealing with lids. Optionally drizzle extra caramel on top. Store refrigerated up to 3 days or at room temperature if consumed within a day.

Notes

Use cold butter for the crumble topping to achieve a perfect crumbly texture. Lemon juice in the apple mixture prevents browning and brightens flavor. If crumble topping looks pale during baking, broil for 1-2 minutes watching closely. Do not pack apples too tightly in jars to keep topping crisp. For gluten-free, substitute almond flour; for dairy-free, use coconut oil and vegan caramel sauce.
