A quick and easy pull-apart bread made with pre-made cinnamon rolls cooked in a cast iron skillet, perfect for camping or cozy mornings. It features gooey cinnamon-sugar pockets with crispy edges and is customizable with nuts, glaze, or fruit.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 pre-made cinnamon rolls (about 12 ounces/340 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons (28 grams) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons (25 grams) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon (2 grams) cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 ml) vanilla extract (optional)
  • ¼ cup (30 grams) chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Powdered sugar glaze (powdered sugar mixed with a splash of milk or cream and a pinch of vanilla) for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in your cast iron skillet over medium heat or directly on the campfire grate. Swirl to coat the bottom and sides (3-5 minutes).
  2. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract if using.
  3. Open the cinnamon rolls and cut each into quarters or halves for bite-sized pieces.
  4. Toss the cinnamon roll pieces gently in the cinnamon sugar mixture, adding nuts if desired.
  5. Arrange the coated pieces snugly in the skillet in a single layer, allowing slight overlap.
  6. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil and cook over medium heat or campfire coals for 15-20 minutes, or bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 18-22 minutes until golden and gooey.
  7. Check the bottom for a golden, slightly crisp texture; cook an additional 3-5 minutes if needed.
  8. Remove from heat and let cool for 3-5 minutes. Drizzle with powdered sugar glaze and serve warm.

Notes

Use moderate campfire coals to avoid burning. Rotate skillet halfway through cooking for even heat. Butter is essential for crisp edges and flavor. Can be customized with nuts, dried fruit, or glaze. Store leftovers in airtight container up to 5 days refrigerated or freeze up to 3 months.
